SALOMÉ BERGER
Hedera Helix, Oil and ink on canvas, 2020-2021, 190 x 160 cm, courtesy the artist
The artist says:
Artificial leaves, branches and buds are staggered on an abstract background painted and sprinkled with ink, overlaid with an opaque shape painted in oil paint. The painted form, partly organic in nature, yet also featuring hard edges, suggests fragments of a landscape or details of cell structures or tissue. The leaves overlap and intertwine rhythmically, breaking up the edges of the underlying form and creating a correspondence between the different elements of the image. The work ‘Hedera Helix’ shows one of my preferences, namely my fascination with contrasts. The tension between dissolution and condensation, between figurativeness and abstraction, and the composition of diverse elements, as well as a colourfulness that lies between explosion and delicacy.
